Barack Obama presents rescue plan after GM declaration of bankruptcy
Nov 16

Monday, June 1, 2009

In a televised speech from the White House at 16:00 UTC today, President of the United States Barack Obama presented a reorganization plan following the 12:00 UTC announcement by General Motors that it had filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, the largest bankruptcy of a U.S. manufacturing company.

Describing the problem with the company as one that had been “decades in the making,” Obama explained the rationale behind his proposed reorganization plan for General Motors. He stated that his intent was not to “perpetuat[e] the bad business decisions of the past,” and that loaning General Motors money, when debt was its problem, would have been doing exactly that. His plan, he stated, was for the United States government, in conjunction with the governments of Canada and Ontario (which he thanked for their roles alongside the government of Germany which he thanked for its role in selling a corporate stake in GM Europe), to become shareholders in General Motors. The United States government would hold a 60% stake. The government will give GM a capital infusion of US$30 billion in addition to the funds it has already received.

Of the government ownership he stated that he refused “to let General Motors and Chrysler become wards of the state”, and described the bankruptcy of Chrysler, and the bankruptcy of General Motors that he envisioned as being “quick, surgical, bankruptcies”. He pointed to the bankruptcy of Chrysler as an example of what he envision for General Motors, but stated that General Motors was a “more complex company” than Chrysler.

Responding to challenges voiced by political opponents, before the speech, that the federal government would actively participate in the affairs of the restructured company, he stated that he had “no interest” in running GM, and that the federal government would “refrain from exercising its rights” as a corporate shareholder for the most part. In particular, he stated that the federal government would not exercise its rights as a shareholder to dictate “what new type of car to make.” He stated that he expected the restructured GM to make “high quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow,” and several times described what he anticipated as “better” and “fuel-efficient” cars, after a streamlining of GM’s brands.

He said to the general public that “I will not pretend that the hard times are over.” He described the financial hardship that some — shareholders, communities based around GM plants, GM dealers, and others — would undergo as a “sacrifice for the next generation” on their parts, so that their children could live in “an America that still makes things,” concluding that one day the United States might return to a time when the maxim (a widely-repeated mis-quotation of what Charles Erwin Wilson once testified before the U.S. Senate when nominated for the position of Secretary of Defense) would once more be true that “what is good for General Motors is good for the United States of America.”

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng
Nov 14
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Duties And Responsibilities Of A Mortgage Agent Nov 14

 • Click Here For More Specific Information On:
 • Sefiani

By Adriana J. Noton

Banks have resorted to agents as a result of the stiff competition within this sector as well as related areas. A mortgage agent sells mortgages on behalf of banks and might have this as their primary business activity. Their payment is a percentage of the total sale or transaction which varies according to the size of the sale.

Their regulation is important because they have to be held responsible for any actions that might hurt the client. It is also important to make sure that they operate within the boundaries of the law to ensure that guidelines are followed. It also helps with maintaining a live database of professionals which can be helpful to potential clients.

The fact that they sell the products for the banks means that they have to work closely with them. It helps them to know everything about the products so that they can give clients relevant and accurate information. This comes in handy especially during the times when the client is experiencing uncertainty.

One of their biggest duties is to bring business through tools such as marketing. They do the required research for compilation of information packs containing information the prospective clients can use. They also do follow ups every now and again to encourage the prospective client to sign up.

To provide a product that is suitable for the client the professional always stays familiar with current market trends. They properly asses the market to see if they can find products that are suitable for the unique current position of the client. This is done in conjunction with assessing the financial situation of the client.

They explain all the legal requirements and regulations and guidelines to the client and also explain the importance of compliance. They collect all the necessary paperwork such as bank statements and identity documents. They also help with the filling in of all the necessary forms.

One needs to compare and assess the commission plans of different professionals before they can make the final decision on which one to work with . It is a good idea to work with someone or an agency which is pedigreed. Hence a thorough look at their background can go a long way in helping one establish this. However it is advisable to look at other factors in addition to price when choosing an agent. Dependability and good time management are other important factors to look at. The cheapest agent may not necessarily be the good one for your circumstances.

It is a good idea to remain vigilant and alert at all times because agents can be unscrupulous. Some are known for capitalizing on the ignorance of the client when it comes to knowledge on these mortgages. The potential for larger financial gain can make them greedy but nevertheless there is recourse for the aggrieved client. It is possible to report them and you can file for damages from them. It is a good idea to make sure that one is well versed with their rights in such relationships.

Poker’s all about luck, says Swiss Supreme Court
Nov 14

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

The Supreme Court in Lausanne, Switzerland has ruled that Texas hold ’em poker is a game of luck, rather than a game of skill. As a result, only casinos can host poker tournaments in Switzerland. Private games with friends, even where money is at stake, are still permitted under the ruling.

Poker tournaments had been growing in popularity in the country, with many events held in hotels and bars. Such venues do not have to pay the 50% tax on profits levied on licensed casinos, nor comply with regulations combating money laundering and gambling addiction. Poker is now categorised alongside roulette and slot machines, which as games of luck can only be played inside casinos. Mathematics, strategy, and bluffing were less important in determining the result than chance, said the judges, overturning a lower court ruling to the opposite effect, and disagreeing with the stance of the country’s Federal Gaming Commission.

Before the ruling, it had been estimated by the Swiss Federation of Casinos that there were about 100 unlicensed poker tournaments every weekend. A Swiss poker website, SwissPokerTour.ch, has described the result as “a black day for all amateur poker players in Switzerland.”

4-year-old boy killed by dog in Liverpool, England
Nov 13

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

A four-year-old boy has been killed by a dog in the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. The child has been identified as John Paul Massey. The animal belonged to his uncle. The boy’s 63-year-old grandmother Helen Foulkes tried to protect the boy but ended up getting bitten by the dog in the process. She had to receive hospital treatment for the injury.

The dog itself was shot dead in the front garden of the house where the attack had taken place. The police had said that they did not take further action after receiving a report about dog breeding earlier this year.

Chief Superintendent Steve Ashley from the police force said about the incident: “In February this year a housing officer rang Merseyside Police to say they had received complaints of dog breeding at the address. At that time the police said it wasn’t a police matter and no action was taken by Merseyside Police.

That is contrary to our policies and an investigation is now launched into exactly what happened in February.”

Night Of The Living Debt How Re Aged Bills Can Hurt You Nov 13

By Charles Essmeier

No one likes to deal with debt. Borrowers don’t like to pay it and creditors and collectors don’t like to collect it. But debt is what makes our society work, as few people are able to pay cash. It’s not a problem most of the time, as the vast majority of borrowers pay on time. Sometimes, those debts go unpaid, and when that happens, creditors notify the credit bureaus and the unpaid debts are noted on the borrower’s credit report. The notation will stay there until the debts are repaid, or until seven years go by, whichever comes first. After seven years, the debts, paid or not, disappear from the borrower’s credit report.

Sometimes, however, those debts come back, seemingly as if from the dead. If your debts go unpaid for a long enough period of time, your lender or creditor will eventually write off the debt as a loss. They will then sell those debts to collection companies, often for pennies on the dollar. The collection companies try their best to collect some of the unpaid funds. If they get anything at all, they come out ahead. On occasion, those collection firms will report those debts to the credit bureaus as though those debts were new ones, rather than old, uncollected bills. Officially, doing so is known as “re-aging.” Unofficially, it’s known by the creepy moniker of “zombie debt.”

Zombie debt is illegal; debt is supposed to be reported to the credit bureaus only once. After seven years or repayment, those debts are supposed to be permanently gone. Collection agencies re-age the debt in order to put additional pressure on the borrower to repay. After all, having a new black mark appear on your credit report years after the fact will not make anyone happy. The agencies hope that debtors will be sufficiently scared by the new notation on their credit report to offer to settle the debt. In exchange, the collection firm will report the bill as paid, thus removing the notation.

What can a consumer do about zombie debt? If you have proof that the bill has been paid, that more than seven years have elapsed or that the debts were discharged in bankruptcy court, you can submit proof to the credit bureaus. That should be sufficient to get them to remove the notation. If you fail to do so, you will have to endure another seven years of bad credit and unfavorable loan terms unless you pay off the debt.

Australian Health minister makes inappropriate comments about Brogden suicide attempt
Nov 12

Monday, September 5, 2005

Australia‘s Federal Minister for Health, Tony Abbott, has made a number of comments about the previous New South Wales Australian Liberal Party leader, John Brogden, who recently attempted suicide, which have been widely thought to be inappropriate.

Abbott is reported to have made comments such as “If we did that, we would be as dead as the former Liberal leader’s political prospects” and “Whenever you hear that David Clarke is doing bad things, you know he is really doing a great job”, referring to the factional leader claimed to have led the campaign against Brogden. The comments were made at a party function approximately twelve hours after Brogden’s suicide attempt. Abbott is also reported to have said “I just want to make it clear I have never told an inappropriate joke, I’ve never pinched a woman on the backside and I never make inappropriate gestures to women” at a Kenthurst Liberal Party branch meeting, in reference to Brogden’s reported behaviour at a function approximately two months ago.

There have been calls for Abbott to resign or be sacked by Prime Minister John Howard from some sectors, such as persons involved in mental health care, as well as the Federal Opposition. They claim that the comments show that Abbott is not mindful of mental health issues when they should be foremost in his mind.

The comments were first raised with Abbott by the ABC Insiders program yesterday. He confirmed that he had made the remarks and offered to apologize “if anyone is upset”, and later that day made such an apology. The extent of the apology was criticised in the House of Representatives in Federal Parliament that day, with Julia Gillard, the Shadow Health Minister, calling it “half-arsed” during debate on a motion to censure the minister for his comments. The motion was rejected as the Liberal/National coalition form Government federally.

There is suspicion that the tipoff about Abbott’s comments was made by a member of the left-wing faction of the Liberal party, of which Brogden was a member, as a form of payback against members of the right-wing faction, of which Tony Abbott is a member. The Liberal right are said to have been involved in the campaign against Brogden.
